6th Calvary Regiment of North Carolina. It appears that William Riley Garren originally enlisted
in Company F., then consolidated with elements of Co. G, 1st Organization to form Co. G, 2nd Organization.
Company F primarily raised (recruited) in Clay County,
N.C., and Company G (2nd) recruited from Macon County, N.C. This reinforces the belief
that William served with his peers prior and after the consolidation.

The 6th North Carolina Cavalry Regiment was officially organized by the consolidation of the 5th and 7th North Carolina
Cavalry Battalions on August 3, 1863 under terms of special order 183, paragraph 16, from the Confederate Adjutant and Inspector
